Want to be healthier? Just let go and link up!
Men, (especially Welsh men) are notoriously stubborn! It’s why a lot of men benefit from partners and wives that will push them to make changes for the better.
The idea of eating better, getting active, or opening up emotionally can feel like it’s messing with who we are. But here’s the truth—change doesn’t mean losing yourself. In fact, it can unlock more confidence, strength, and make you feel better!
Research shows that making even small changes in our physical health can have a massive impact on how we feel. Regular exercise releases endorphins—those feel-good hormones that can lift your mood and reduce anxiety. In fact, studies show that just 30 minutes of moderate exercise a few times a week can lead to noticeable improvements to how you feel. Similarly, improving your diet can influence your mood; foods rich in vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, are linked to lower rates of depression.
However, many men don’t make these changes because we cling to a “lifeboat” of control and old habits that we think keep us safe. We can be look tough on the outside but we are scared boys in the inside! Psychological research indicates that the fear of change often stems from a desire for stability and predictability. This resistance can create a cycle of stress and anxiety, making it harder to take those necessary steps forward. But real strength comes from letting go of that false protection. Once we embrace the benefits that change can bring, we stop fearing it. Instead of seeing it as a hassle, we start to view it as an opportunity to become more grounded and secure in who we are.
Here’s the kicker: as we open up to change, connecting with others can make it stick. Studies show that social support plays a critical role in health outcomes; people who have strong social connections tend to live longer and experience less stress. Reaching out to mates, family, or a support group helps us stay on track, share the load, and remember that we’re not in this alone. This support system isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s what builds real resilience.
So, this Men’s Health Month, make it about linking up with the people around you. Start small, embrace the changes you need, and tap into the support that’s there. Real strength isn’t about control; it’s about opening up, connecting, and becoming the best version of yourself, surrounded by those who’ve got your back. Let’s make a change and support each other in living healthier, happier lives!
