Facilitating a group
What is a Facilitator?
A facilitator helps guide the conversation and protect the tone of the space.
We prefer the word facilitator to leader. A facilitator isn’t there to lecture, diagnose or try to solve everyone’s problems.
They are not the expert. They are not the fixer.
Their role is to help the group run well – making sure everyone gets a chance to speak, conversations stay respectful, and the space feels safe and welcoming. Sometimes that means encouraging quieter voices. Sometimes it means slowing down louder ones. Sometimes it simply means holding the space and letting people talk.
”Your job isn't to have the answers. Your job is to create the space.
Sid - Facilitator
Before the session:
Welcome people
Introduce newcomers
Explain the ground rules
Remember: Go easy on advice – Many men arrive wanting solutions – Often what helps most is being heard.
During the session:
Start with a check-in
Let silences happen
Encourage quieter voices
Slow down advice-giving
Keep discussions respectful
”If Nobody Talks… Don't panic. Silence isn't failure. Give people time. Ask simple questions. Share something yourself if appropriate. Many good conversations start after a few awkward minutes.
