Step-By-Step: Starting Your Group
Step 1.
Men’s groups can take many forms - Decide your own flavour!
Not every man wants to sit in a circle and talk. Many find it easier to open up while doing something alongside others.
Your group could be: Sit and talk – Walking – Men’s Shed / woodwork – Sports and a chat -Fishing – Cold water dips – Guest speakers
The activity isn’t the main point – it simply takes the pressure off. Often the best conversations happen while walking, making tea, or doing something together. Whatever the format, the goal is the same: creating space for connection, conversation and support.
”"You don't have to do it alone. Ask for help and you'll be surprised who steps forward."
A bit About Digital and Online Spaces
Online groups can be especially valuable in Wales, where distance, transport, shift work, caring responsibilities or anxiety can make attending in person difficult. An online group or even a simple WhatsApp community can help men stay connected who might otherwise miss out.
Keep things simple. Choose a platform that people are familiar with, set clear ground rules, and make sure someone is available to help with basic tech issues. It’s worth joining early, testing links, and having a backup plan if technology doesn’t cooperate. Online groups shouldn’t replace face-to-face connection where possible, but they can be a powerful way to extend support and build community beyond the room.
”The ‘feel’ of the space matters more than format.
If advice dominates, men withdraw. If banter dominates, depth disappears. If one voice dominates, others retreat. Encouragement is part of the journey.
Step 2.
Find a venue
Look for somewhere:
Affordable, Easy to reach, Private enough to talk and Comfortable.
Good options:
Community centres, Sports clubs, Libraries, Church halls, Workplaces or Gyms.
Avoid clinical-feeling spaces if possible.
Step 3.
Pick a time
Consistency matters! Try to keep: Same day – Same time – Same place
”And Small Things Matter. Don’t underestimate the power of Tea. Coffee and Biscuits.
Do I Need to Be a Charity or CIC?
Not unless you want to be. Many groups start with a few people wanting to be there for others.
